Ammonite Pearls

The oldest known fossil pearls date from 230-210 million years ago, although molluscs have undoubtedly been producing pearls since they first appeared about 530 million years ago. Always rare, they are almost always associated with marine bivalves, although ancient freshwater molluscs also produced pearls. It is also thought that some fossilised pearls are from ammonites that produced the “pearl” as a defence mechanism against parasitic worms. The ammonite would seal itself off from parasitic intruders by creating a “pearl” to capture the parasite in a mineral sphere.
